2011 French Open Tennis Winners

Roland Garros, also known as the French Open, is the second Grand Slam of the year and the
world’s premier clay court  event. The French Open event  is considered as one of the most
competitive tournament in history of tennis sport. It is played in the year after Australian Open
held in the middle of  Jan.

The Roland Garros Stadium is a tennis venue located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, France.
The place is named after Roland Garros, a French fighter aircraft pilot during World War I, who, on
23 September 1913, became the first man to fly an airplane over the Mediterranean Sea.

Clay courts slow down the ball and produce a high bounce when compared to grass courts or hard
courts. For this reason, clay courts take away some of the advantages of big serves and serve-and
volleyers, which makes it hard for serve based players to dominate on the surface. For example,
Pete Sampras, a player known for his huge serve, has never won the French Open (nor has he ever
advanced  to the final in his entire career). Similarly, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, and Boris
Becker, three classic serve-and-volley players, never won this tournament.’

On the other hand, players whose games are more suited to slower surfaces, such as Bjorn Borg,
Ivan Lendl, Rafael Nadal, and Mats Wilander, have found great success at this tournament. In the
open era, the only male players who have won both the French Open and Wimbledon, played on
faster grass courts, are Rod Laver, Jan Kodes, Bjorn Borg, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Roger
